Gluconolactone is a polyhydroxy acid or PHA that has similar effects to alpha hydroxy acid or AHA, but as it has larger molecules, does not penetrate as deeply into the skin as the most commonly used AHA, glycolic acid, thereby making it less irritating to the skin. Gluconolactone removes dead skin cells and moisturises the skin very effectively, smooths fine lines and the skin’s surface, and strengthens the skin’s protective barrier. In addition, it has antioxidant properties, meaning it protects the skin from free radicals.
